In 2021, Teresa Burbery’s life took an unexpected turn when she sustained a spinal cord injury. After spending 20 years building a successful career as a professional hairdresser and salon owner, she was suddenly faced with the challenge of rebuilding her independence and adapting to a new way of life. While the journey has not been without its challenges, it also opened the door to a new purpose – one centred on helping others through compassion, understanding and lived experience.
Throughout her rehabilitation, Teresa became aware of the limited mental health support available for people adjusting to acquired disabilities. Rather than allowing that experience to define her, she used it as inspiration for a new goal.
Determined to help others facing life’s challenges, Teresa enrolled in a Diploma of Counselling at TAFE Queensland. With support from a scholarship funded by Community Bank Samford, she was able to take the next step towards her new career.
For Teresa, the application process itself became a turning point.
“It was the first time in a few years that I was able to identify my skills, achievements and goals. It gave me the strength to really go for it.”
Now progressing through her studies, Teresa is gaining the skills and confidence to support others through difficult life transitions.
