More Than a Meal: The Breakfast Club Serving up Community Support

16 March 2026

A hot shower. Clean clothes. Breakfast and a cup of coffee.

For many people, these small routines are simply part of starting the day. For others, they can be difficult to access.

At the Peninsula Support Hub in Redcliffe, The Breakfast Club provides these everyday essentials to people experiencing hardship. Operated by a dedicated team of volunteers, the service offers meals, food hampers, showers, laundry facilities and internet access.

For many guests, these simple things are more than practical support; they are a chance to restore dignity and feel human again.

A Growing Community Service

The Breakfast Club has supported vulnerable members of the Redcliffe community since 2017, starting out from a small shopfront with limited facilities. The move to the purpose-built Peninsula Support Hub has enabled the service to grow significantly and reach many more people in need.

Today, the team offers five meal services each week, along with food hampers and drop-in support sessions. Demand has increased rapidly. The very first breakfast service at the hub served 35 meals; since then, the number of guests attending has doubled.

With upgraded facilities and extra support, The Breakfast Club can now offer a wider range of services that tackle daily challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness or financial hardship.

Restoring Dignity Through Practical Support

One of the most impactful additions to the service has been access to essential facilities, including showers, laundry services, and safe food storage.

Since opening, the hub has provided:

•             4,646 meals to people in need

•             1,081 food hampers to support individuals and families

•             714 showers for those experiencing homelessness

•             401 laundry services, helping guests maintain clean clothing and personal hygiene

Guests regularly share how access to basic facilities can change how they feel about themselves and their day ahead.

“It means I don’t feel like a refugee. It makes me feel human.”

“After a couple of months without a shower, having a hot shower made me feel alive and refreshed.”

“After a hot shower, I feel ready to face the day.”

These small acts we often take for granted are life-changing for the recipients of this initiative, which is exactly the experience that the volunteers behind The Breakfast Club aim to provide.

Community Support Making a Difference

The Breakfast Club rely on strong community partnerships to continue its work. Pine Rivers Community Finance, through Community Bank Samford, is proud to support this mission.

“We are proud to support The Breakfast Club, which has been a community pillar for the past nine years. Recently, funding from our community grants program enabled them to buy a new fridge, doubling food storage for daily meal services and food hampers, which are distributed twice weekly to those in need. Computers were also purchased, giving guests internet access and printing facilities, as well as helping the administrative team with enough technology,” said Community Bank Samford Senior Branch Manager, Mandy Bell.

The program’s success has also been boosted by collaboration with organisations such as Orange Sky Australia, whose volunteers provide laundry services and have supported upgrades to the hub’s drying facilities.

A Place Where Community Comes Together

For The Breakfast Club team, the Peninsula Support Hub has become more than just a service location. It has become a gathering place for the Redcliffe community.

On any given day, the building is filled with conversation, volunteers preparing meals, and guests sharing stories. Many visitors take pride in the space, helping with small tasks around the hub and contributing to the welcoming environment that has developed there.

As Michelle Gilchrist from The Breakfast Club explains, the hub has created a place where people feel comfortable walking through the door.

“It provides a space where the community can come together and care for others. People know they are welcome, whether they need support or simply have something they want to share.”

In a time when many people are facing increasing financial pressure, services like The Breakfast Club provide something simple but powerful; a reminder that no one has to face hardship alone.

Through the dedication of volunteers, the support of local partners, and the generosity of the wider community, The Breakfast Club continues to offer meals, connection and dignity to those who need it most.
